Five Lessons Learned at HOEM
Arriving at HOEM as an international student in winter 2022, amidst the world's initial steps towards recovery from the pandemic, adapting to Canada and reconnecting with people proved challenging. Yet, the lessons I've learned along the way have made my journey smoother.
Open-mindedness
Stepping into a country rich with diversity and a melting pot of cultures was a thrilling yet unfamiliar experience. Embracing this diversity, I learnt curiosity and openness, welcoming new traditions and perspectives from around the globe. Opening my mind to various religions, languages, traditions, and holidays was not only enriching but also surprisingly rewarding.
Patience
Having grown familiarized with the dynamics of my family home, transitioning to life in a student residence was a stark change. Learning to navigate this new environment taught me the value of patience. Understanding that everyone carries their own burdens and perspectives, I found that exercising patience with my roommates permitted better communication and got us a long way.
The Power of Kindness
In my encounters with new acquaintances and explorations of unfamiliar places, I discovered the great impact of a kind word. Simple compliments about someone’s outfit or gorgeous smile and expressions of appreciation had the power to instantly brighten someone's day. I learned that kindness costs nothing but holds immeasurable value in the hearts of others.
Start Today
Inspired by friends engaged in powerlifting, I found myself eager to start on my own fitness journey. However, I hesitated, unsure of when the right moment would come. It was during this uncertainty that a friend reminded me: every attempt begins with a first step, and today can be that day. Though intimidating at first, I committed to regular gym trips, gradually building strength and confidence. Two years later, I reflect on that life-changing decision with no regrets. Don't wait for tomorrow; embrace each new endeavor as a day one, knowing that every journey has a beginning.
